PC World refuses Windows refund

PC World refuses Windows refund
AN INQ reader who bought a PC from PC World has had no joy getting his money back on the pre-installed Windows software that came with the kit.

Barry Dorrans bought the PC so that he could test the Windows Home Server Beta and wanted his cash back on the pre-installed copy of Vista.

He reasoned that even if he put Vista back on the machine he would use his MSDN licence for Vista Ultimate.

But while outfits such as Dell are giving punters their money back, apparently PC World is telling punters to go forth and multiply, in a nice way of course. A letter back from the outfit says that the operating system comes as part of the package pre-loaded onto the machine and therefore no refund.

Barry was not deterred. Having read the Vista EULA he knew that the licence said that he could reject the software by not accepting the terms and get a refund.

Just to make sure he penned another missive to PC World and attached a BBC story to show the good people athem how this was being interpreted elsewhere. Again no dice.

PC World suggested he talk to Vole directly as it had nothing to do with them. Barry tells us he has asked for this in writing so that he can have a quiet world with Microsoft Licensing.

File Allocation Table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

File Allocation Table - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
File Allocation Table (FAT) is a partially patented file system developed by Microsoft for MS-DOS and was the primary file system for consumer versions of Microsoft Windows up to and including Windows Me. FAT as it applies to flexible/floppy and optical disk cartridges (FAT12 and FAT16 without LFN support) has been standardized as ECMA-107 and ISO/IEC 9293.

The FAT file system is relatively uncomplicated, and is supported by virtually all existing operating systems for personal computers. This ubiquity makes it an ideal format for floppy disks and solid-state memory cards, and a convenient way of sharing data between disparate operating systems installed on the same computer (a dual boot environment).

The most common implementations have a serious drawback in that when files are deleted and new files written to the media, their fragments tend to become scattered over the entire media, making reading and writing a slow process. Defragmentation is one solution to this, but is often a lengthy process in itself and has to be performed regularly to keep the FAT file system clean.

Tail packing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tail packing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some file systems have since been designed to take advantage of this unused space, and can pack the tails of several files in a single shared tail block. While this may, at first, seem like it would significantly increase file fragmentation, the negative effect can be mitigated with readahead features on modern operating systems – when dealing with short files, several tails may be close enough to each another to be read together, and thus a disk seek is not introduced. Such file systems often employ heuristics in order to determine whether tail packing is worthwhile in a given situation. In some scenarios where the majority of files are shorter than half the block size, tail packing can increase storage efficiency even more than twofold, compared to file systems without tail packing.[1]

This not only translates into conservation of disk space, but may also introduce performance increases, as due to higher locality of reference, less data has to be read, also translating into higher disk cache efficiency. However, these advantages can be negated by the increased complexity of implementation.[2]

As of December 2006, the only notable file systems with support for tail packing are ReiserFS and Reiser4.

Run Linux, lose warranty

Linux.com | ChangeLog: Run Linux, lose warranty
Laura Breeden bought a new Compaq Presario C304NR notebook in January. She bought it because she wanted to get rid of Windows and all the malware that surrounds it and move to Linux, and her old laptop lacked the memory and power to run Ubuntu Edgy. The salespeople assured her that the C304NR was “Linux ready.” But they didnt tell her that running Linux would void her warranty.

Until recently, shes been happy with it, and with Ubuntu Edgy. But a couple of weeks ago she began having keyboard problems. The keyboard is misbehaving when she begins to type quickly: keys are sticking and the space bar does not always respond when pressed.

When she called Compaq — the unit comes with a one-year warranty on the hardware — they asked what operating system she was running. When she told them Linux, they said, “Sorry, we do not honor our hardware warranty when you run Linux.” In order to get warranty service, she was told, she would have to remove Linux and reinstall the original OS.

Laura is not a software engineer, but she failed to see how her choice of operating system could damage the keyboard. Furthermore, there isnt a word about the subject on the Compaq C304NR Web page — nothing to alert consumers to the fact that if they chose a reliable, secure operating system like Linux instead of Windows, they would lose their rights to service under warranty.

Undeterred by Blu-ray hacks, Sony unveils yet another cipher for DRM
The idea is to make it possible to implement the protection as a relatively inexpensive hardware component for media playback devices. Software implementations are also possible, and Sony claims that they will achieve “high speed performance on a wide variety of processors,” although the company declined to give specific figures.

Block ciphers are a common cryptographic tool used in many existing algorithms, including the US government encryption standard DES—a variant of which has been used to serve secure web pages—and its replacement, AES. Unlike simple ciphers that translate a character at a time, block ciphers encrypt entire blocks of text at once, using a secret key which can be of varying lengths. CLEFIA uses a block size of 128 bits, and can be configured to use keys of 128, 192, or 256 bits.

Best Buy Receipt Check - die.net

Best Buy Receipt Check - die.net
I’m generally adverse to the whole shopping experience and tend to operate in the power shopping, “hit and run” mode.

So four shopping days before Christmas I decide that my remaining gifts will be digital satellite systems, and I proceed to the back of the Lakewood, California Best Buy and end up at the mixed personal communications and odd-things-to-attach-to-your-TV counter. Surveying my options, I feel vaguely less manly as I eschew the top-of-the-line, surround-sound-laden, multiple-receiver-ready models in favor of a pair of beginners packs inclusive of the dish, appropriate electronics, and every possible wire, nut or bolt their future owners would need to get each going. Having made my decision, I’m now ready to be done.

I begin to understand that this would not be my fate today, though, as the “helpful” salesperson politely ignores my query for more stock than the one box I find and proceeds to tell me about the great features of the higher end systems, including the dishes that allow the use of two receivers simultaneously so I won’t need to buy more than one complete system.

After being convinced that I’m not going to budge from my decision and trekking off to what must’ve been the end of the earth to retrieve my box, I’m told that these items must be checked out at the counter I’m standing in front of. Before he will even take my credit card, though, I have to fill out my name, address, etc on three different forms which then get laboriously typed into the register. By the time we’re through the repeated sales pitch on the extended warranty and the inspection of the contents of my purchases, I’m in what might be considered a hurry to leave.

So when I’m faced with the prospect of standing in a long line at the exit to have yet another person rifle through my property, I dodge the line and head for an unused automatic door, countering an insistent “Sir, can I see your receipt?” with a polite “No, thank you.”

I’ve gotten so used to this trick at Fry’s Electronics that I don’t really think twice about it. You see, Fry’s doesn’t trust their underpaid staff manning the cash registers to actually do their jobs right, so they post a door guard to ask people walking away from the registers carrying plastic bags to let them verify that all of the items in the bag were rung up on the receipt.

But this verification step is purely voluntary. Merchants basically have two rights covering people entering and exiting their stores. They can refuse to let you enter the premises and/or to sell you anything, and they can place you under citizens arrest for attempting to leave the premises with any property that you haven’t paid for. But the second you hand over the appropriate amount of cash, they lose all rights to the items. They can’t legally impair you from leaving the store with your property.

Apparently the employees of my local Best Buy aren’t very familiar with annoying pedantic individuals who will choose principals over convenience when walking out with a shopping cart full of expensive home entertainment gear. I manage to get about 5 steps out the door before the door guard catches up to me and grabs my cart, with the “sir” in his “I need to see your receipt, sir” somehow not very complimentary. This is apparently a stalling tactic, as shortly a few more blue-shirted employees make a move to block me from making any more progress toward my car.

I ask, still calm, if I am being detained for shoplifting. This suggestion apparently shocks my captor into regaining some of his senses, and he lets go of my cart. I explain that unless he wishes to do so, he has no right to stop me.

This is clearly baffling to the poor fellow. He suggests again that my receipt simply needs to be checked, struggling to grasp why it is that I won’t just be a nice little customer and submit to the store policy. I spend a few moments trying to explain myself, but clearly have too much adrenaline flowing at this point to be particularly erudite. I give up and proceed in the direction of my car.

Shortly a yellow-shirted fellow, who I take to be a managerial-type, again tries to plead a case for the receipt-checking. I ask again if I’m being detained for shoplifting. He says no, but shortly thereafter mentions that he’ll need to call the police shortly if I don’t offer a receipt. I tell him to please do so, while loading my packages into the car. I suggest that before doing so he take a moment to talk to either the helpful salesperson who rung me up or to compare their inventory against sales receipts, as to avoid looking like an ass to the cops.

As I get in my car to leave, two Best Buy lackeys in a pickup truck decide its a good time to park behind me, blocking my path again. By this time, I’ve had just enough of this crap and not very politely or discreetly ask them to get out of the way. With only a little hesitation, the yellow-shirt nods in their direction and I’m soon free to leave.

Its been a few hours, but I’m still half expecting a man with a badge and a gun to show up at my door to check my receipt.

Thar she blows! Dead whale explodes - Environment - MSNBC.com
“What a stinking mess. This blood and other stuff that blew out on the road is disgusting, and the smell is really awful,” a BBC News report quoted one Tainan resident as saying.
TRUCK CARRIES THE CORPSE OF SPERM WHALE
Taiwan Apple Daily via Reuters
The sperm whale was being carried by truck through Tainan.

The whale had died on Jan. 17 after it beached itself on the southwestern coast of the island.

Researchers at the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan said enough of the whale remained to allow for an examination by marine biologists.

Once moved to a nearby nature preserve, the male specimen — the largest whale ever recorded in Taiwan — drew the attention of locals because of its large penis, measured at some five feet, the Taipei Times reported.

“More than 100 Tainan city residents, mostly men, have reportedly gone to see the corpse to ‘experience’ the size of its penis,” the newspaper reported.

Mel Gibson Lashes Out At ‘Apocalypto’ Critics

Mel Gibson Lashes Out At ‘Apocalypto’ Critics - Movie News - Playfuls.com - Fun & Entertainment
Maybe some anger management classes might come in handy for actor/director Mel Gibson who exchanged angry words with a college professor after she accused him of racially stereotyping the Mayans in the movie “Apocalypto.”

Following a screening of his controversial movie, “Apocalypto,” Gibson, who was taking questions at a Los Angeles University, became the center of uproar when he swore twice a female professor who challenged him.

Alicia Estrada, an assistant professor of Central American studies at the university, questioned Gibson’s research for the film, a blood-soaked historical epic of the final days of the Mexican Mayan Empire.

She asked him after his presentation if he read anything about the Mayan culture before shooting the film. According to Estrada, Gibson replied, “I spent two years reading a f—ing (lot) of books”.

Gibson, who made last-minute appearance for the meeting at Cal State University at Northridge in the San Fernando Valley, was taken by surprise and lost his temper, reportedly telling Estrada to “f—k off.”

“In no way was my question aggressive,” Estrada said.

“I stated a very valid academic question. He argues he studies Mayan culture and the representations he provides are authentic. I asked him who his sources were.”

“He told her to `F— off, lady,’” said CSUN student Josue Guajan, 22, of Van Nuys, a native Guatamalan who is half Mayan.

“I was shocked about his response. I thought he would be more civilized and it would be educational.”

Then, two people, one of whom may have been Estrada, were booted from the room.

Apathy dominates Australian PS3 launch - PlayStation 3 Feature - Australia’s PAL Gaming Network
Sony threw a massive launch party to celebrate the PS3 going on sale. However, the situation wasn’t nearly as glorious as was anticipated, - a comparatively miniscule number of customers actually went to the effort of showing up.

The biggest event went down at the Myer’s Pitt Street store in Sydney. Barricades were set up, security were on hand and the effervescent radio personality Lizzy Lovett was on stage ready to rev the crowd. At 9:30pm, only a showing of Casino Royale away from sales, noone had shown up to wait in the barricaded line. Still, the night progressed relatively steadily, and eventually the crowd rose to around 70 customers - with several hundred cash-strapped onlookers.

Child’s Play: Should I stop my preschool-aged daughter from exploring her body?

Filed under: random — Mark @ 9:49 am

Advice on manners and morals. - - Slate Magazine
I am the mother of a beautiful, clever, generally well-behaved 4-year-old girl. I adore her, and she’s a delight to be with in public and sweet as pie with other adults. My problem isn’t something that other moms talk about, or that I’ve seen other little girls do. My daughter likes to—uh, how shall I put this?—rub herself on things: tables, chairs, ottomans, stairs. She really gets into it, and can go for long periods—half an hour, 45 minutes. She becomes very intent and flushed, and often gets upset when we try to stop her (probably because it feels good—duh!). My husband and I call it “doing that thing” and we have been generally tolerant of it, even though it has embarrassed us when she’s done it in public places like bookstores or at the babysitter’s house. We think exploring one’s body is a normal thing and that probably she will grow out of this, but when friends come over and see her “doing that thing” on the coffee table, it’s a real conversation-stopper. Should we prevent or prohibit this behavior, just because it embarrasses us? I don’t think it’s a disciplinary issue, because she’s not disobeying us or hurting us or herself. We just figured it was something that she would grow out of, but she’s doing it more and more. It’s just such a strange, awkward habit, and I can’t settle on a graceful, sensible, loving solution.

—Puzzled

Dear Puzzled,
Now that you know what your daughter’s up to, look more closely and you may occasionally notice other sweet little girls plastered to furniture, oblivious to their surroundings. Of course she’s upset when you try to stop her. If you felt you had 10 orgasms to go, you’d be annoyed if your mother told you you’d had enough. There’s nothing strange about preschoolers masturbating—for reassurance, read about it at this University of Michigan site, or in the book Everything You Never Wanted Your Kids to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid They’d Ask)—you will be able to relate to the mother of a 2-1/2-year-old who is quoted as saying, “Oh, my God, I realized Ella’s humping Barney.” How confusing and crushing for your daughter it would be if you tried to stop this behavior completely because of your own embarrassment. You want her to be comfortable with exploring her body and with the idea that it can be a source of pleasure. But at age 4, she is old enough to understand the distinction between things that are fine in private but not in public (she’s toilet-trained, after all). You can explain to her that “doing that thing” is for at home when there’s no company (if there’s company, let her know she can do it in her room). When you’re in public, and she starts approaching the nearest ottoman with that look on her face, tell her that’s for when you’re home, and come up with something to distract her. As for outgrowing “that thing,” in a few years she will take it completely private (you needn’t worry that your daughter will be rocking herself on the coffee table when she’s 16), but you want to handle this now in such a way that you help her retain her robust joy in her body.

The case for socialized medicine, Part 1. - By Timothy Noah - Slate Magazine
Suppose the national defense of the United States were relegated to the private sector. Instead of the publicly funded Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, the country would be defended by private militias funded mainly by insurance companies. In the event of foreign attack on U.S. soil, the militias would defend those citizens in the affected areas who’d paid defense insurance premiums through their places of work (or, if self-employed, as individuals).

The best-armed troops would defend the wealthiest and most hawkish segments of the population, who would have paid the highest premiums.

This is, of course, what he is writing on the board, where an “FAG” is another, new type of automaton that he is teaching us, with the formal definition that follows, and then an example of what a F.A.G. looks like (including the chicken scratch).

Yeah, that is obviously true…

IBM boffins claim cooling breakthrough

IBM boffins claim cooling breakthrough
IBM RESEARCHERS say they have developed a new technique to improve the cooling efficiency of chips. IBM’s Zurich Research Lab has come up with an improved method of attaching chips to their heatsinks that can significantly enhance thermal efficiency.

Thermal paste is enriched with metal or ceramic particles which transfer heat from the chip to the cooler, but even highly particle-filled pastes are still inefficient, wasting up to 40 percent of the overall cooling capacity and the particles tend to bunch up resulting in uneven cooling.

But by using micrometer-sized channels on the chip, arranged in a tree-like pattern, a more even distribution of the particles can be achieved, reducing the thickness of the paste and improving its thermal efficiency by a factor of three. The development will allow conventional air cooling to remove more heat, reducing the need for more exotic and expensive cooling techniques, says IBM.

Who looks like an idiot? I do

Filed under: personal — Mark @ 9:40 am

Let’s start with some background, shall we?

Went to bed last night, but before I went to sleep I turned on some music on my laptop to go to bed to, and put the laptop on my headboard. There are two LEDs on the front on my laptop, the left indicates if the battery is charging/charged, and the right indicates if ac is connected. Usually they are both very bright and very blue (full charge, ac), so I covered the lights up with some cloth.

I wake up this morning and notice that the music is not playing. I first check the laptop to see if maybe Josephine turned it off, but both LEDs were off, so I thought maybe the ac adapter had become disconnected. I pulled it apart and reconnected it, nothing. I did the same to the adapter to the computer, but still nothing. Perhaps the wall outlet had “died” somehow. I tried it on different sockets, in different rooms, but still nothing. Maybe it was something wrong with my power cord all together. I tried the one for Josephine’s laptop…but nothing.

So here is what I do. I take Josephine’s laptop, pull out the hard drive, get my laptop, pull out the harddrive, and I boot Josephine’s laptop with my harddrive and the Ubuntu live CD, and begin frantically copying data to my desktop computer, just in case I can’t retrieve it or worse…have to ship it off for repair. Repair is worse because  they’d probably wipe the hard drive (stab in heart), and then probably install windows on it (stab in brain). At that point, I would probably be left to die. I luckily copied just enough important information so that by the time I had class (9:00), I could just use Josephine’s laptop and put my notes on a flash card. I figured I’d try at least the most convenient (but probably not cheapest) option and take my laptop to DogHouse computers after I got out of class.

With my old laptop, the circuitry inside where the ac-line comes in had shorted and began overheating. DogHouse repaired it for a nominal fee, and now that laptop is running as smooth as ever.

I get back from class and pack up the laptop, and Cordelia and I were off to DogHouse.  We get there, they ask what the problem is, and I begin explaining to them what I described up to this point, and at the same time they proceeded to plug in the system and try to boot to verify the problem.

Of course, the laptop boot up as if there wasn’t any problem to begin with. Yeah, at that point I looked like a dumb jackass. Now I am at home, typing this on that very same laptop. I hate computers.

They’re saying odd stuff, like Macs are good for business; Macs can save money; and that Apple’s stock — at $90 a share — is a bargain.

In fact, there seems to be a widespread re-evaluation of Apple going on, a cultural shift that’s changing the way people think about the company. It’s been building for a while but it has reached a tipping point in the last couple of months. Here’s what people are saying now.

Bring on the bling with Beryl: a look at a new Linux window manager: Page 1
Desktop computing technology has evolved considerably since the first graphical user interface was developed by researchers at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center in 1973. Thirty years after the conception of the window and the cursor, developers are now challenging conventional interface paradigms in order to provide users with a whole new generation of visually responsive and aesthetically provocative software technologies. Microsoft’s Aero Glass, Apple’s Quartz 2D Extreme, and Sun’s Project Looking Glass are all poised to transform the way that users interact with computers. Also at the forefront of innovation, the Linux community has some prodigiously impressive new user interface technologies of its own. Beryl, a new open-source window manager for Linux, features compelling visual enhancements like support for transparent windows and elaborate window animations. Based on David Reveman’s Compiz window manager, Beryl leverages hardware-accelerated rendering to provide support for unique and innovative graphical functionality.

Coding Horror: Dude, Where’s My 4 Gigabytes of RAM?
Only 3,454 megabytes. Dude, where’s my 4 gigabytes of RAM?

The screenshot itself provides a fairly obvious hint why this is happening: 32-bit Operating System. In any 32-bit operating system, the virtual address space is limited, by definition, to the size of a 32-bit value:

232 = 4,294,967,296

4,294,967,296 / (1,024 x 1,024) = 4,096

As far as 32-bit Vista is concerned, the world ends at 4,096 megabytes. That’s it. That’s all there is. No más.

Slashdot | XLiveCD: Cygwin and X For Windows On A Live CD
“OSnews is running a story on XliveCD which runs an X server (from X.org) from the CD using Cygwin. Also included are awk, sed, perl, vim, bash, grep, other text utilities, and most importantly an OpenSSH client. XliveCD is being developed by University Technology Services of Indiana University. Now you can carry Cygwin with you! I have been looking for something like this for a long time. Torrent link.”

No pain, no gain: AMD jumps into semiconductor top 10 list
Ruiz’s stated goal for AMD is 30 percent of the CPU market, a number that would have seemed impossible to reach just a few years ago. Now, the company has a strong lineup of products and an in-house graphics card and chipset maker, an asset it has never had before. 30 percent is doable, but it’s going to take a lot of pain to get there. One upside: AMD’s (and Intel’s) pain should be our gain, as competitive pressures keep prices under control.

White House finds damage control elusive

White House finds damage control elusive - International Herald Tribune
WASHINGTON: As White House aides combed through documents trying to figure out if Karl Rove, the senior strategist, should talk to Congress about the dismissal of federal prosecutors, President George W. Bush set off for Camp David, his retreat in Maryland. But the rain grounded his helicopter and he was forced to go by car instead.

It was a small glitch, but a fitting metaphor for a White House that has been knocked back on its heels all week by its first big clash with the new Democratic majority in Congress.

BYU Fit, UL Lafayette Fat

BYU Fit, UL Lafayette Fat
NEW YORK — College life is known for dorm food, cheap beer and all-nighters pulled off by a strong pot of coffee. While this stereotypical lifestyle holds true at some schools, others are opting for healthier habits.

Brigham Young University, the University of Southern California at Santa Barbara and Boston University took the top spots on Men’s Fitness’ Fittest Colleges list. On the magazine’s Fattest Colleges list, the South didn’t fare well with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the University of New Orleans and Mississippi State University coming in at number one, two and three, respectively.

The magazine partnered with the Princeton Review to survey nearly 10,000 students from more than 660 of the nation’s top colleges and universities, asking them 18 questions grouped into five categories: student bodies (sex, height, weight and total weight gained or lost since beginning college), exercise, bad habits (fast food, alcohol, smoking, sedentary activities), other lifestyle choices (supplements, sleep, whether student’s significant others help or hinder their fitness goals) and the campus culture of fitness (a school’s physical-fitness requirements or recommendations and student impressions).

howto: reset root password (or any other for that matter)

recover my root password

You basically have to gain access to your machine somehow to alter the respective files. A pretty convenient way is to use the bootable installation CDs of some Linux distro and launch some “recovery console”. If you can’t see some comand like that you might try the ALT+F1..Fx keystroke to maybe get a clear console.

Once you have managed to get into a shell you need to mount the partition that holds your /etc directory. To reset the root password open the file /etc/passwd and look for a line starting with …

root:x:………

Delete the “x” in this line as it tells that the password is shadowed. Save the file.

Secondly open /etc/shadow and search for the entry for the user “root”. This one usually looks like this …

root:$s0m3fR1g9InMD5h45H::::::

Delete all values (the stuff between the columns) so that you get a line like this …

root::::::::

Save the file, unmount the partitions and reboot. The root-account should not have set a password now, which you should change immediately again.

Videos and Pictures from the Zachary trip

Filed under: darpa uc 2007, personal — Mark @ 7:46 am

The first is a little video I made that is called “I am Suresh“.

There is also a quick view of zachary and then I also got some video of a couple autonomous runs of the RaginBot.

As far as pictures go, I took some with my camcorder and there are also some available from padraic’s camera.

Enjoy.
