Still trying to get WinXP Tablet installed on Danny’s tablet computer. The MSDNAA is screwed up, they removed me from the system and Frank had to put me back in, and all the software and links are screwed up. But, I’m still trying….we’ll get this eventually.
Pocket of Pain for Young Graduates
Details buried deep in Census Bureau data show a sustained drop in earnings for 25- to 34-year-old grads, to their lowest level since 1997
Young college grads are taking it on the chin. That’s what the new data from the government show—and it’s not a pretty sight.
Well the last couple of days haven’t been so great, I’ve been running a fever and achy, etc… Well, I think I’m finally getting better. I’ve also emailed my cover letter and resume, and we’ll see how that goes.
Just hanging out with the pickle now, she likes SunnyD
Slashdot | Star Trek PhD Thesis Wins Academic Prize
“A PhD thesis based on Star Trek has won an Australian university’s top academic prize. Dr Djoymi Baker’s 90,000 word dissertation ‘Broadcast Space: TV Culture, Myth and Star Trek’ was awarded the University of Melbourne’s Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence in the PhD. Dr Baker watched over 700 Star Trek episodes — more than 624 hours — to investigate the relationship between ancient mythology and today’s popular culture. American academics thought her research was ’superlative’ and suitable for teaching.”
Costco selling 400 GB hard drives for $100 | TG Daily
Just when you thought hard drive prices couldn’t get any lower, certain Costco stores are selling 400 GB internal hard drives for $99.97. The Western Digital 7200 RPM drives have been available for a few weeks and the price thankfully does not include any coupon or rebate hassles.

Delays are nothing new in tech, but Sony seemed intent on making the worst of it. The crowd was kept waiting nearly an hour. Then Kaz Hirai, who heads PlayStation in North America, took the stage to declare, “The next generation doesnt start until we say it does” He meant it as a dig at Microsoft, but to gamers whod been salivating for a year, his words were like a bitch slap. The demos that followed were no more impressive than those the year before. Finally, PlayStation chief Ken Kutaragi came forward to make the one announcement everyone wanted to hear: the price. $600 for the high-end model? The room gasped, then fell silent. Almost immediately, the blogosphere lit up with denunciations: Sony has turned its back on gamers. The PS3 will be a failure. Kutaragi and Hirai are idiots.
One News
The parents of 17-year-old Liam Ashley, who was beaten to death en route to prison, say they were the ones who charged him with theft.
Ashley was found badly beaten in the back of a Chubb Security van on Thursday night. Although he was revived by paramedics at the scene, he died on Friday.
Ashley’s family say his parents wanted to teach him a lesson about the consequences of breaking the law. He had taken his mother’s car without permission so they had him charged him with theft.
On Thursday Ashley appeared at the North Shore District Court. The judge offered him bail but his parents chose to send him to prison as a deterrent.
But on the trip to Auckland Central Remand prison, he was believed to have been strangled and assaulted by two others in the van.
This was probably the busiest sunday morning shift I’ve ever had. To give you an idea, I typically make $30-$40 on a sunday morning till 3 shift. My sales are typically around $200. Yesterday I made $92 and my sales were $490. Yeah, fun shit.
Since the pickle was at my mom’s, I hung out at the casa while Jo was working. The Babineaux’s had come in, and I was playing their BrainAge game on their DS-lite, which was pretty damn fun. I decided I wanted to go to walmart and get me one too, so I headed off to walmart to get me a DS-lite and some games. Probably the most implulsive buy I’ve done in a while, aside from the fact that I’ve thought about getting one for a while, but I just made my mind up all of a sudden.
While at walmart, I saw John Kurtz! He was saying how horrible of a week he’s had, being GM at the breaux bridge burger king. We talked a lot while I passively bought my impulsive DS-lite. It’d be sweet if he came back to the casa, and he wouldn’t mind either. I think it’s that whole left-us-hanging issue that stands in his way.
Time to go play my games….I bought BrainAge, MarioKart, and Tetris.
The Tech Report
Following on the heels of our Friday deal of the week post is this evening’s topic: the ever-growing, can’t-kill-it phenomenon of the mail-in rebate. I hate them, and I want them to die. They are intentionally designed for and depend on low redemption rates in order to succeed, and rebate processing firms game things in order to ensure their success. Their shady practices bilk consumers out of millions.
Some of you, I know, enjoy rebate deals. You like feeling the charge of getting a special deal. Perhaps you hear the sound of a cash register ringing in the background as you fill out that microscopic form. Perhaps you just like being able to justify a purchase you might not otherwise make. Whatever the case, their psychology works for you.
Bink.nu | Bad news for Microsoft Windows Media (WMA) DRM cracked!!!
A new app called FairUse4WM can be used to strip Windows Media DRM 10 and 11 (i.e. PlaysForSure, but not WM DRM 9). But before we proceed, let’s just be totally clear on how the system works: providers like Napster and Yahoo Music Unlimited provide subscription service for unlimited access to Windows Media DRMed files; stop paying the fee, stop getting access to the files — but you already knew all this. We tried FairUse4WM and we can verify that it quickly and easily stripped the DRM from our Napster To Go tracks, and made them freely available to play on our Mac.

Vista will be the last version of Windows that exists in its current, monolithic form, according to Gartner. Instead, the research firm predicts, Microsoft will be forced to migrate Windows to a modular architecture tied together through hardware-supported virtualisation. “The current, integrated architecture of Microsoft Windows is unsustainable - for enterprises and for Microsoft,” wrote Gartner analysts Brian Gammage, Michael Silver and David Mitchell Smith.
Don’t disobey the judge and don’t sue innocent people
Today’s bit of free legal advice comes to us from the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, where we learn that defendants should not use disk-cleaning utilities to wipe portions of their hard drives before turning them over to plaintiffs in the course of discovery. Delina Tschirhart did just this, according to District Judge Orlando Garcia, who was none too pleased about the situation.
Tschirhart was engaged in a lawsuit with the RIAA, which had sued her for downloading more than 200 music files in 2005. The files in question were downloaded using BearShare and iMesh by a user named “ugotburnedby21″—we’re going to go out on a limb and assume that one of her two children were involved (the judge notes that these three were the only people with access to the computer). When discovery began, the RIAA asked the judge for a mirrored copy of Tschirhart’s hard drive in order to look for evidence of copyright infringement. The judge agreed. The drive was turned over to computer forensics expert David Schroeder, who claimed (and the defendant’s own expert did not dispute) that data was removed from the hard drive before it was turned over.
Last night I made lots of $$$. It is always when it is raining really bad that people start flooding in. We had a lot of people on wait for a long as time, and I was constantly busy.
It’s good, because I needed to make a little money anyways.
In other news, my two new books came in. I’m going to start reading the MySQL Tutorial and then move on to the other one with is titled something like PHP and MySQL Web Development something-or-other, but don’t quote me on that.
Well, didn’t have bowling yesterday, so I slept in. That was pretty nice, considering it felt like I was falling behind on sleep.
I was looking at how many classes I have left until I graduate, and it turns out to be 12, for the next three semesters. That means I can probably start taking it easy with my later classes, and it’ll give me more time for all the work that I’ll have in them. I went and talked to Dr. Jim about whether or not I have to take Compilers….and I don’t, but I do have to take something else in its place, such as a senior project.
I can tell that my TR classes are gonna be a drain, for one it seems like I am in the same classroom all day (close to it, 2 are the same, and one is directly downstairs).
My parents came over and we ate some food and talked a little while. Then they stole the baby. After that I went to help danny with installing windows on his tablet, and that has been the source of never-ending surprise. It seems like it is impossible to install it on there, but this time our problem was with the product key. So I emailed Dr. Frank and he sent me a new one, we’ll see how that goes.
I only have one class today and then work. W00t.

Parents who warn their teenagers about the dangers of speeding will have another tool at their disposal when a product that monitors car speed hits the market this fall.
The palm-sized device was developed by a Lunenburg High School student entering his senior year. Jonathan Fischer, 18, hopes his invention will facilitate communication between parents and teenagers and prevent young drivers from speeding and swerving on treacherous rural roads.
The device, which plugs into the electrical outlet in a car and sits on the dashboard, will monitor a car’s speed only when the driver exceeds a specified limit.
Speed-Demon is not the first speed monitor, but it is the first product that tracks speed only when drivers exceed a limit that parents or someone else can set, instead of tracking speed and location all the time.
Well, it has been a long time, but I’ve actually has some good dreams over the past couple of nights. Working at Casa Ole so long, I always have the dreams of waiting on tables, not the most delightful of dreams.
However, over the past couple of days I’ve been straining to learn some new stuff as fast as I can, and the result is I am dreaming in code…code that makes sense. That’s right, I’ve been dreaming in PHP and MySQL. It was a relief that I didn’t have some random person that I “forgot” in my dream to wait on, but instead I was solving problems while coding.
Wired News: Bob Dylan: Technology Sucks
Bob Dylan says the quality of modern recordings is “atrocious,” and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.
“I don’t know anybody who’s made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really,” the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
Dylan, who released eight studio albums in the past two decades, returns with his first recording in five years, Modern Times, next Tuesday.
Noting the music industry’s complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, “Well, why not? It ain’t worth nothing anyway.”
Well, having three computer science classes in a row, even though it was the first day, is completely draining. I also have to buy a few more books for classes, that kind of sucks. On the upside, bowling should be pretty good at relieving some stress.
ROFL!!!
Dvorak Uncensored » Prime Time Porn Shown by Accident. Can we see that again?
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) — Sweden’s state broadcaster SVT on Monday faced ridicule for mistakenly showing a porn movie in the background of a news broadcast over the weekend.
Viewers of a 5-minute news update at midnight Saturday could see explicit scenes from a Czech porn movie on a TV screen behind news anchor Peter Dahlgren.
The monitor — one of many on the wall of a control room visible behind the studio — normally shows other news channels during broadcasts.
Wired News: Perpetual Motion Claim Probed
Sean McCarthy believes his small Irish high-tech company has overturned one of physics’ most fundamental laws.
It happened by accident, he says. His company Steorn was looking for an efficient way to power closed-circuit TVs that spy on ATMs, and instead stumbled on a technique they think produces more energy than it consumes.
The company hasn’t released specific details about the process, other than to say it involves magnetic fields configured in precisely the right way. Using the magnets results in a motor that’s more than 100 percent efficient — essentially creating energy, McCarthy says.
For scientists and engineers, this is the equivalent of a perpetual motion machine, and is almost unanimously viewed as flat-out impossible. McCarthy, an affable former energy company engineer, knows just how preposterous his claims sound. So, he advertised in this week’s Economist for a panel of the “most cynical possible” physicists to help validate them.

I’ve “added” my blog to Facebook. It isn’t formatted like it is formatted here, in Facebook it just takes out the newlines and whatnot and wraps everything together, pretty unattractive. But I figured maybe someone will want to look at it, so why not.
Go to
Google
and type in “failure”
and hit the “I’m feeling lucky” button.
Do it.
There might be a job headed my way…i hope. I just need to see if I’m ready for it or not. But first, classes begin tomorrow. I need sleep above anything else.
Well, here’s a little sampling of today’s tips:
Check Tip Percent
$48.11 $3.00 6.24%
$16.18 $2.82 17.43%
$28.89 $5.00 17.31%
$45.01 $7.00 15.55%
$34.07 $6.00 17.61%
It’d be fine and dandy if everyone tipped around that 17% range. But they don’t, and that’s what screws things up.
In other news, I’ve made a temporary list of things I intend on eating. Since I was hungry when I made this list, it is kind of long:
- Tacos San Lucas
- Mixed Fajita Tacos, 2 Beef and 1 Chicken, with a side of ccq
- Queso Chicken
- Steak Ranchero, but no ranchero sauce with ccq
- Grilled Tilapia with Ixtapa Sauce, add extra mushrooms
- Grilled Pollo Club sandwich
- Fajitas Del Mar or Mixed Fajitas with extra grilled shrimp, veggies well done
- Chicken Caesar Salad, with extra grilled shrimp on top
It has become more and more depressing lately. I swear people are clueless. Last night, one of the other servers had a guest who asked him “How much do ya’ll make, if you don’t mind my asking?” Apparently, his answer was enlightening, after learning that the server makes $2.13/hr plus tips…essentially making all money from tips…the customer gave him a $20 tip on a bill of $30. Sounds a little over-the-top, but these situations don’t balance out the load of crappy tippers that seem to exist in Lafayette. Yes, the latest examples, such as a tip of $5 on an $80 ticket, or $4 on a $70 ticket have seemed to drive me crazy. I’m getting tired of being nice and giving people great service, when I get the shaft in return. It seems that the nicer you are to people, the more they’re gonna screw you over in the end, and I’ve observed this several times. As soon as possible, I’m getting out of the service industry. I hate it. I enjoy talking to these people, and I do have a good time. But in the end, I am there to make money, and it just doesn’t pay to be nice, because people will write on the comment card “Excellent Service” and tip less than 10%. Pfft..
I just need the right kind of job to come my way, so that I make near the same, if not more, than now.
