Parish officials expect to annouce re-entry plan to evacuees sometime
Thursday, September 29 and is meeting tomorrow morning to devise a
plan. Sulphur water is safe to drink and Lake Charles has water
service, but the water is still not safe to drink. Mayor Randy Roach
says the boil water order still applies to Lake Charles. Officials
also urge citizens to not get on the waterways of Lake Charles.

Lower parts of the Calcasieu Parish still had severe flooding Sunday,
and it may experience additional flooding later as water from
Hurricane Rita in areas north of Lake Charles head south. Parts of
Lake Charles where water was up to 6 feet deep Saturday were down to 2
or 3 feet. Based upon early estimates, the parish office of emergency
preparedness says at least 20 to 25 percent of the parish’s homes, or
roughly 65,000, will have serious damage from floodwater or rain in
homes with wind damage.

The evacuation before Rita was much more successful than it was in
Mississippi and Louisiana as Katrina approached _ in large part
because citizens seemed to take the danger more seriously after seeing
so many people stranded in flooded New Orleans. “The fact is, we’ve
never had an evacuation this size before: 2.7 million people,” said
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. About 85 percent will have some damage,
they say, and at least 5 percent have been totally destroyed
